Real  OR  Unreal  !

Many have observed the recent Trump-Kim summit as a victory of North Korea over America. As a small nation it was able to bring a big nation the recent Trump-Kim summit as a victory of North Korea over America. As a small nation it was able to bring a big nation like America from a bullying position to the position of discussion and some mutually benefitting agreements. There are some who saw this as victory of U.S and how Trump from his aggressive stand became more mellowed and more adhering to a friendly diplomacy.

What we witnessed was some bonhomie moments and exalted moments of leadership a treat for press photographers. The press had a great time covering this whole episode of camaraderie. Trump announced the suspension of US military exercise with South Korea which was really a big surprise for Kim Jong Un. Trump was surprised by Kim by signing a joint statement by committing to denuclearization. Some political  observers  see this  not  a sincere

sincere commitment as North Korea had earlier made such commitment and slipped from it according to their convenience.

A few months back the whole world turned apprehensive. When North Korea fired a missile over Northern Japan last August, Trump retaliated with fire and fury by conducting military drills of US with South Korea many times to intimidate North Korea.  There was a fear of another world war and many countries strongly reacted to it. South Korea had commented “great victory, huge step forward” by all of us.  President Moon Jae-in praised the historic summit and said that it is a great victory achieved by United States.  The people of South Korea too did not hide this happiness. They felt it as an opportunity for Koreans to “liberate” from the constant uncertainty of war, and that it was better than nothing.

China said, “We might lift sanctions.” China, North Korea’s leading partner said it is mulling to adjust or even lift its sanctions on

North Korea. Chinese state media closely covered the summit and seems positive and agreeing to the talks.    Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang told reporters, “The UN Security Counceil resolutions that have been passed say that if North Korea respects and acts in accordance with the resolutions, than sanction measures can be adjusted, including to pause or remove the relevant sanctions. “ People’s Daily reported ,” Beijing welcomes and supports the history-making talks between DPRK and VS leaders and will continue to play a unique and important role to resolve the peninsula issue.”

Japanese Prime Minister Shinjzo Abe thanked Trump for raising human rights issues. During the 1970s and 1980s at least 17 Japanese citizens have disappeared at the hands of North Korea and still remain missing. Trump had said that he had absolutely raised the issue of abduction with him even though they were not mentioned in the joint statement.

The European Union commented, “This summit was a crucial and necessary step to build upon the positive developments achieved in inter-Korean relations, “. It welcomed the summit as a sign that diplomacy is the only way to embrace peace.

Denmark was cautious enough to evaluate and comment on the summit and described it as a diplomatic breakthrough. It also added that history taught us that we must be vigilant. The prime minister’s office said: “North Korea has previously agreed to disarmament and not kept its world.”

Iran taking cue from its past experience warned Kim not to trust Trump and said he could cancel denuclearization agreement within no time.

Russia went to register a positive evaluation of the deal… “Now we can only welcome the fact that an important step forward has been made, of course, the devil is in the detail, and we have to delve into specifics.

But the imperative, as far as we understand, has been given.”

India’s foreign affairs ministry stated it hoped for completed implementation of the agreement signed in Singapore for a lasting peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula.

Trump will get the credit of having tamed a dictator like Kim. He may even get a Nobel Prize for peace. His image may change from an aggressive personality to that of a peace loving person.  Now Kim will be worshipped more in his country, he now has the blessings and patronage of U. S.

While the writer was writing this article, a news video clip was aired by BBC. In it the voice of Trump is much different than what we saw a few days back during the summit. Donald Trump while answering to a question on Kim said, “He speaks and his people sit up at attention. I want my people to do the same.”  Unknowingly he revealed his mind; it was more of a authoritarian voice and reveals how much Kim has influenced him.  When another reporter pointed about Kim’s human rights violations, he replied that he doesn’t want to see a nuclear weapon destroy you and your family and he wants to have a good relation with North Korea.

Kim Spoke to America not by words but with action. Trump’s antagonistic attitude of inciting fear didn’t work with North Korea. During President’s election Trump had claimed that when he becomes President he will pulverize North America. In reply to this, Korea replied by strengthening its nuclear arsenal.  It had successfully experimented two nuclear missiles which has the range to reach Alaska and California. This has really worked in bringing America to its lines and for diplomatic talks.

June 12 will be marked in history as the day of North Korea and not of America. Anyway it is a first step taken towards peace in the region and coming days need to prove whether it will work or elapse.                                                                                                                  Bonnie Basil
